I'm not an "eBay collector" but from time to time I'll use eBay for a
part or odd item. When I first signed up for Paypal I gave them my CC
number and they put some limit on what I could charge. O.K fine. It has
been dropping (the amount) every time I use Paypal. Well it seems they
want my checking account number so I can be verified????? I don't think
so. CC number should be good enough. I am not willing to give out more
and more personal information. Identity thief is out of hand already.
Please enlighten me.

You can cancel a credit card easier than you can close a checking account,
maybe? Seems like a reasonable safeguard for their protection, but I can't
speak for them (though I'm positive the reasons are available on their
website). More importantly, though, connecting right to your checking
account eliminates the wait and transfers the money to your recipient
immediately. (I don't even have a credit card -- I refuse to hemmorhage on
interest to buy things with money I don't have, but that's just me.) But
what more do they need for identity theft than a credit card number? (Don't
even get me started on the Western Union questions I had to answer yesterday
to get an account open for a transfer!) But why would a company the size of
eBay/PayPal steal anybody's identity who can't possibly have as much money
as their company already does? And how on earth would such a visible
company pull off such a practice, or even have leaks of information, without
a couple million eBayers holding them immediately accountable? The bigger
they get, the more they have to lose by screwing up and the more watchdog
eyes are on them!

Aside from the convenience factors, the bottom line is that PayPal offers
*some* recourse -- maybe not perfect, but at least something. Money orders
and cashed personal checks do not, period.

But I mean, we're all rational, civilized adults with lots of experiences,
good and bad... Maybe we should share the techniques and tips for safe
online trading that have worked for us each in the past instead of
slamming/defending PayPal.

Best,
Robert
