How dumb am I?
As you stated, 'we' just wanted the user to know "the computer is up to
something"...
So I just changed the cursor icon with some JS:
document.body.style.cursor = 'wait';
and then when the file had uploaded
document.body.style.cursor = 'auto';
<rolls eyes at self>
