Seems reasonable. Thanks.

Dan,
So does this mean that pkg(5) would have the special package names "SUNWipkg" and "entire" hardcoded into it somewhere?

SUNWipkg and SUNWcs, actually. We use the presence of those
packages to determine that the given image is an opensolaris one.

For the multi-platform packaging of IPS, we use the package name "pkg" rather than SUNWipkg and there is no entire package. Can this be made configurable somehow? Maybe a special attribute on certain packages ("update-me-first" or something like that)?

I'd still like to see the message after the successful update be driven from content in packages rather than hardcoded into the pkg(5) software.

Tom, I hope I've been clear that this is a temporary solution
designed to ease things for our early adopters as we work towards
November.

We're all aware that pkg(5) has consumers outside of opensolaris.
On the other hand, those consumers must acknowledge that we'll
sometimes need certain distro-specific hacks for expediency.
This is one of those times, and what we can hope is that it'll
provide us with valuable real world experience to input into a more
complete design.

It's always been obvious to me that we need to transform what I've done
to something driven by metadata, and that everyone will benefit from it.
However, there simply wasn't time to do this for the BTS release.
