As a further followup. If we switch to -p being the default, then
to search olders servers will require the user to specify -a. Given
that it'll probably be a while before the servers we don't control
switch over, I think this is another reason for defaulting to -a.
Since you have to deal with older servers being queried if the user
provides -p, and we control the majority of the package servers that
will be used for remote search, is there really that much concern?
If a user specifies -p and queries an older server, we tell the user,
don't do that, in more polite terms.
Right, but I was just pointing out that short of two known
repositories (blastwave and sunfreeware), every one of them will
support search v1.
Indeed. I think keeping those 2 repos working by default is a plus.
I think you'd agree that from a usability standpoint, -p (showing
package names for results) is a lot friendlier to most users,
especially those new to OpenSolaris.
I agree. I'm not sure now is when to make the switch.
When we upgrade the depot seems like a good time. It would also get
more testing of search v1 functionality, right?
Um, nope? Don't see the connection there at all. Clients will be trying
v1 search no matter what.
Cheers,
