Great that you are working on this and offer a patch. Thanks! Beware, though, that a complex patch combining multiple unrelated changes has a higher risk of containing flaws and (mainly) therefore is less likely to be adopted by the maintainer(s) of the package. Personally I only feel comfortable working with packages that use CDBS, so won't be dealing with this one anyway. Just sharing a general concern here.
