I found out, that the gl errors and this intermittent speed breakdowns I had,
were caused by to large texture files.
I used textures with an resolution of 512x512 or more and got a lot of
errors and stalls.
With smaller files (scaled down to 256x256 with gimp and converted to ppm
with jpegtopnm/Netpbm) everything works fine.
