Your problem doesn't seem to be with your chat script but with PAP
authentication, which is done by ppp right after a modem link is
established, but before you can get connected to the remote network. I'd
make sure your login and password are properly entered in
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets in the format:
name * "password"
Note: those are tab(s) in between, not spaces.
Make sure this is the option being sent to PPP too, after the "name"
parameter. :-)
Then you can also check with your ISP to make sure that the login is
allowed to connect, in the first place (or you can test this using say, a
Winblows box). :-)
