But 2k for customs tariff? C`mon, there's definitely something
wrong here.
If its a door to door delivery, the shipping and handling costs
are already payed by the shipping vendor, what do you have to pay
customs for?
The customs code specifies that..
1) if the item's valuation is $100 or less, it is exempt from additional tariffs
2) if the valuation is more than $100, there is a 10% VAT (soon to be 12%) plus a 15% input tax, for a total of 25% tariff.
please note that valuation is the landed cost which means, total declared value on the package, plus cost of shipping.
but 2k for a customs tariff means the item was worth 8k? i would definitely contest such a valuation. but on the other hand if the valuation is correct... then you'd really have to swallow it. the problem is that all of these rules aren't "handy" or well-known, so unless you bring a copy of the customs code with you, you may not get anything from arguing with the customs examiner.
that said, i've only have had to pay customs duties once -- when i ordered a book and a bunch of Tara Maclean CD's from amazon. those customs people sure know the amazon logo!! but all the other times, i didn't have problems. but then again i was ordering "junk" -- never mind that some of that junk was a Zeiss Sonnar lens, it looked like any old lens to the customs examiner (and thus, 20 peso fee).
the really valuable stuff, i ship via Johnny Air Cargo.
