I do hope that us, the open source community, would stand up and take notice of these complaints. Of course all of us can say that the systems admin must have been sitting on his rear end and doing nothing about the issues -- after all, most of the solutions for these are probably a Google search away. But then, why do these things *just work* in Windows land, but not in
They don't always "just work" -- see below, although mine might be an isolated case.
Linux land? Hardware support is of course a hairy issue -- the open source community needs the full cooperation of hardware manufacturers to be able to pull things off. But for the others -- it shouldn't take a Google search to resolve problems as basic as these. I would be longing for that day when users can just use Linux and not worry about being resourceful in order to fix issues or problems.
FWIW, I have no trouble connecting to the Internet -- apart from the initial DHCP timeout -- with my FreeBSD setup. In contrast, my Windows 98 partition doesn't see my ZyXEL modem or the NetGear router so my Windows is effectively isolated. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing :) As to hardware support, a blog entry in Free Software Magazine has proposed an OpenOEM specification -- visit http://www.digg.com/tech_news/The_Open_OEM_Let_s_build_the_Best_Open_Computer to digg it, and ignore the misinformed comments about "who's gonna pay for it all?". It may not solve Obet's problem, but it's something to work for, for the long term. Digg also has an item from Mark Shuttleworth's Web site -- http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Mark_Shuttleworth_1_Keeping_it_FREE -- although I'm not quite sure if it's relevant to the discussion. Stumbled into it when digg opened on my browser. -- Daniel O.
