I have the misfortune of being stuck using their service, and have
experienced no special problems connecting to their service (when it is
available anyway). I've tried plugging in directly to the Ethernet
cable which they provide (there's a small widget that they plug into
the main cable which goes to the antenna, and this widget is powered by
a brick which plugs into the wall socket, and the other end of the
widget is a usable Ethernet port), and get an IP address via DHCP.
If it's a new computer whose MAC address is unrecognized by the system,
using a browser to go anywhere sends you to a portal page, where you
have to authorize. Since you are booting off a live CD on a machine
that has used the connection before, you presumably have an authorized
MAC address, and that shouldn't be an issue.

It's more probable that the computer in question has an oddball NIC
that Ubuntu is unable to automatically configure. Personally, I use a
Linksys router I bought myself so that I can be connected anywhere in
the house, and all it does is get an address via DHCP.
