Probably a mis-identified LAN card. Although it's been a very long
time since I saw any of those.

Unlike DIdo, my Smart Bro experience has been almost uniformly
positive. I'm lucky, I guess.. we have four PC's here at home (two
wired, two wireless) and sharing the connection using a WRT54G. Since
the Linksys is connected to the Motorola Canopy CPE, it's the Linksys
MAC address which is identified on Smart's network.

Don't get me started on the Convergent Realtime Platform...

Now if only I could get the Centrino wireless card on this notebook
working.. (it works fine on Windows, but not on FC6)

I have the misfortune of being stuck using their service, and have
experienced no special problems connecting to their service (when it is
available anyway). I've tried plugging in directly to the Ethernet
cable which they provide (there's a small widget that they plug into
the main cable which goes to the antenna, and this widget is powered by
a brick which plugs into the wall socket, and the other end of the
widget is a usable Ethernet port), and get an IP address via DHCP.
If it's a new computer whose MAC address is unrecognized by the system,
using a browser to go anywhere sends you to a portal page, where you
have to authorize. Since you are booting off a live CD on a machine
that has used the connection before, you presumably have an authorized
MAC address, and that shouldn't be an issue.
