Just a shot in the dark, since it's obviously a driver problem... maybe you want to try some BIOS workaround.

It's a laptop, it's not overclocked. The problem doesn't occur in Windows. The radeon xpress 200m card uses the default xorg drivers. The problem is that, the problem is intermittent. I can't seem to get a fix on what's causing the problem.
