About two years ago, I saw a Pentium 4 server providing LTSP to about 80 computers (mixture of 386 to Pentium MMXs) at a manufacturing plant. They used OOo (not sure what version) and Thunderbird primarily. Another server acted as a gateway, proxy (their ISP is SMART Bro) and mail server.
If I remember it right, I was told that they've been using the same configuration since 2002. The guy that configured the servers left the country when we took a peek (and he's probably a member of PLUG, too). They were very happy with the configuration being low maintenance and all. They only had 1 IT personnel. He attended a seminar on Linux then from there he fixed daily problems with the LTSP server being overloaded. It was then that they sought for help to upgrade the servers since they are about to expand. Only two computers had Windows installed for opening MS Office documents that won't open properly on OOo. Pretty close to corporate use but that's one case that I'm proud of. There are a lot of small offices that also moved to Linux. The largest that I know of has more than 300 computers with Ubuntu. Q1: I think it's very ready for corporate desktop. Q2: When one client of ours saw how Linux worked fine in an office and how much was paid for the license, he said, "Bill better send me a card this Christmas." I think it's the cost. Q3: Lots and lots of preparation for training (user and support) Regards, JP On Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 06:02, eric pareja <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > hi all, > > i know this is a topic that gets regurgitated every now and then, but > that's the whole point of this post. i'd like to hear what people > think about this now, how much things have changed since the last time > this came up. > > the basic question is: is linux ready for the corporate desktop? > > what things have changed that make it better received and what hasn't? > > what strategies do you recommend to those thinking of adopting linux > on the desktop? > > > xen > -- > `..^..' eric pareja ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) lpic-2 | software freedom for all > |<(e)>| gnu linux python debian edu iosn localization tagalog filipino > `..v..' foss internationalization usability pusakat philippines free > "Ang mundo ay aklat, at iisang pahina lamang ang nababasa ng hindi > naglalakbay." > _________________________________________________ > Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List > http://lists.linux.org.ph/mailman/listinfo/plug > Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph > _________________________________________________ Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List http://lists.linux.org.ph/mailman/listinfo/plug Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph
