try a normal filesystem append:

cat file1 >> file2

there's nothing special about pine folders or any mbox folder for that matter.
they're just files in the filesystem. the individual e-mails are separated properly
by their headers and a normal append doesn't affect these. just to be safe however,
i suggest you append the file with the newer messages to the file with the older
ones.
