The big problem with Windows developers is that the Windows development
tools they use might be described in the same way Edsger Dijkstra once
described COBOL: "crippling the mind." There was an article on Salon
someone mentioned here (I believe it was Ian) a while back called "The
Dumbing-Down of Programming" that discussed the issues involved in depth.
They make everything seem so easy that you wind up forgetting what goes on
under the hood. Much programming nowadays consists of writing glue,
stringing together pieces of code other people wrote. There's a big
tendency to treat these chunks of other people's code as black boxes,
without really understanding how they work inside.
Hopefully, we can find a way to reverse that trend.
