You can get both source and rpm of ProFTPd from 
<http://www.proftpd.net/> or <http://www.proftpd.org/>. For most 
software, you should try checking one of the more popular Linux software 
sites, such as Freshmeat <http://www.freshmeat.net/>, SourceForge 
<http://www.sourceforge.net/>, etc... If you have an rpm-based 
distribution, you might want to try visiting RPMFind 
<http://www.rpmfind.net/>

Latest version is 1.2.2rc3 (rc6 from RPMFind).

There are two ways you have proftpd run -- standalone server or through 
inet.d. Again, if you have an rpm-based distro or Debian, just download 
the necessary packages and install either the standalone version or the 
inet.d version.
