Yes you can do this but:

1. As Ian pointed out if your controller goes down so does your array.
RAID is by nature meant to provide security through redundancy (RAID 0 is
the only level that does not fit this) and if you have redundant drives on
a single controller, bale wala. True hardware IDE RAID controllers like
the 3Ware provide independent controllers per drive.

2. There is a significant performance hit with IDE drives sharing a single
controller. If you're after performance, you will want to know of this.
