openLDAP seems to be an appropriate solution. however, it
depends on what authentication do you need?

for example, Linux and Solaris both support PAM (pluggable
authentication modules) which can use a remote LDAP repository
as it's authentication source. you can read up on PAM for
more information.

for other Unix machines, i am not sure if they do support
PAM yet. of course, you can always compile PAM onto these
unixes. however, you can also use NIS (which is an older
technology and has a number of security issues).

another option is to use Kerberos. however, M$ implementation
is supposed to be incompatible with the standard Kerberos
that everybody else uses.
