It's hanging while *installing*.  while probing for PCMCIA.  i could
make boot floppies and boot from those (at least those are writeable,
so i'd have a chance at editing the configuration of the floppy image
from my other linux notebook.  i haven't done that yet though.  not
sure if the pcmcia probe is even configurable that way (if it's in a
script or config file, if it's in an exe, i'm not going to find the
source and compile it myself, i'm sticking with either 8.1 or going
to some other distribution :).
