Yes it is an install error.
And it did happen to Sony units often enough to warrant a new
pcmcia boot floppy.

The symptoms were exactly the same as yours.
During three repeat installs, I switched to Alt-F3, Alt-F4 and
Alt-F5, respectively, just after choosing the install type.
I was then able to catch the last lines of the diagnostics
just before the install decided to meditate.

Anyway, if you're up to it, I'd like to know the last few lines
in Alt-F{3,4,5}, and your PCMCIA card model.
I could pass these on to the MDK cooker team so they could look
into it while mdk9.0 is still in beta.
