oh yeah :). i wasn't thinking clearly when i mentioned the problem
at hand. i was thinking about how to figure out what package a
file was in, because *i* had the postgres and mysql packages installed,
so i had those lib* files he needed, but i couldn't remember which of
the postgres* or mysql* packages they came from exactly :).

so it works for me since i've installed the things he needed :).
of course, since he hadn't installed those databases, he'd need
to maybe run rpm against all the RPMs in his CDs or something to
figure out what files each RPM provides. that could take a while
and asking google might be the better way to figure it out.

i've been looking at "man rpm" and i don't see an option to list
the files that an uninstalled package can provide. is there such
an option?
