Perhaps the solution would be to do as you originally did, list
everything (all cds) to a file, then grep it.  Make the file permanent
so you can search it anytime without listing everything again.  I did
this with the contents of the cdroms so that I don't have to juggle each
disk looking for the rpm file to install.  I would hazard a guess that
the rpmfind database is pretty much like that.
