redoing/reinventing yet another wheel is a waste of time.

true.

basing Bayanihan linux on RH is a good business strategy.
it has a widely known brand & tested distro.
repackaging the whole distro to meet the specific needs
of the pinoys can done in no time, considering the govt's
budget for this project (can we ask M$ Phils for funding?).
and how about "colonial mentality", etc. ?

...we must begin to be innovators not just users
of technology.

iirc, a DOST official said that "RP lacks the D in R&D.."

Hmmm...creating a Linux distro from scratch doesn't mean you'll be
reinventing everything. You can, of course, reuse other components
available. You're crazy if you would implement everything from scratch...
that is reinventing the wheel.

creating gnu/linux from scratch wasnt that hard & time consuming.
but testing & maintaining it does!!!! and to think of it, we are only
doing it on a 32MB CF/DoC linux distro.

can you imagine the time that will be consumed when conducting
a regression test whenever a single library is updated?

that's why we are a step behind in terms of updates. and most
of the time we dont. we only update our system only if it concerns
security & stability. we skip the "feature" upgrade especially
when it is not needed.

reinventing the whole linux distro from scratch is not bad idea
and is highly recommendable (especially if you want to learn
out of it). just avoid it to be become a vaporware unless you want to
betray its users. better yet, just keep it as a Toy OS for personal use
or gratification and release it when it reaches the enterprise standard.

=)
