I reset the "Blank after" setting to 5 minutes and started watching a video longer than 5 minutes and made sure the cursor was on the video. 5 minutes later the screen went blank.
If you are already doing this, then you'll need to use the alternatives you found, or use something like 'caffeine' to at least make it easier. If you are like me and just habitually move the cursor out of the video area, then this may be what you need to get the results you want. Hope this helps,
