Hello, I used to post quite a lot, but haven't done so for a few years, and so had to start a new account.
I used to be on TalkTalk, and the IPlayer plugin used to work very well. I recently changed to Sky Broadband, and today found that IPlayer was taking much longer to connect to streams, and then failed after a minute or so. I had a feeling this might be an IPv6 issue, as on TalkTalk I didn't have IPv6. So I tried changing the IPv6 setting on my server (Ubuntu 16.04) to Link Local only, effectively disabling it's external IPv6. After a restart, IPlayer worked perfectly, the way it used to on TalkTalk. I then started going through the settings on my LMS, and discovered that IPlayer was set to try HLS 1st. I Changed it to try DASH 1st, as I read that this means much fewer DNS lookups. I also re enabled IPv6. I tried again, and IPlayer seemed OK, but stopped after about 5 minutes. So basically DASH seems to only reduce the problem and not fix it. This all seems a bit odd, because I thought the BBC didn't yet use IPv6. But then perhaps this is part of the problem. Perhaps the BBC IPv6 setup is not quite correct, or perhaps DNS is incorrectly returning IPv6 addresses that don't work. Or perhaps something else. Well, any ideas, as I don't really want to disable IPv6 on my server, just for IPlayer.
