This is an intriguing idea.  What about a modified version of the
DateTime screensaver that displayed cpu temp?

I have to admit to not being a big user of lm_sensors.  I never really
know how to interpret the sensors data.  For instance: here's sensors

Look at all those 'alarms'!  And yet the server seems perfectly happy. 
Which are the important lines there, as far as you're concerned?

Anyway, the thing that would prevent me from incorporating a feature
like this right away is not wanting to add a OS specific feature...i.e.
it would take me some time to figure out how to get the same data from
windows, OSX, etc.
