I used to build my own version and not use the repository but recent
versions have been OK except for zombie mplayer processes with the
version in 10.04 but the version with 10.10 is now OK again.

If only used to SBS WMA - then instead of building your own - you could
probably just copy the mplayer binary to a temp dir and remove mplayer
using the package manager.  Then copy the mplayer binary back into the
bin directory
