That is a good question. There are several differences with On Demand -
the chunks of audio are 10 seconds long rather than 6.4 seconds long,
the bit rate will be different (I'm not sure what the non-uk On Demand
bit rate is, but I think it is less than the 96KB/s that I think is
delivered for Live) and the plugin itself handles the initial burst of
chunks a little differently. All of these will affect the
characteristics of the initial burst of data that is shovelled into the
socketwrapper for transcoding, and my guess is that that is different
enough for the transcoding to survive.

I suppose a simple next step in the investigation could be to look at
the debug log for the working On Demand streams to see if there are any
more clues there. But I think that the answer will only be found by
looking at (and understanding!) debug from socketwrapper itself, which
bpa says only goes to the console, so LMS needs to be run from the
console command line to capture that.
