I thought about modifying the lines related to the wired unit like this,
but it didn't work. The same line, from the commandline, produces a
perfectly playable 2 channels 16 bit/44.1 FLAC file. But there seems to
be a conflict with the bitrate limiting and the Squeezeboxes thinking
they are going to receive an mp3 and trying to decode a FLAC like an mp3
(this is my conclusion, due to the strange noises this produces):

flc mp3 * 00:04:00:10:40:0d
        #
FB:{PATH=%f}T:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}D:{RESAMPLE=--resample
%D}
        [flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [ffmpeg] -loglevel quiet -i - -f
flac -ac 2 -ar 44100 -sample_fmt s16 -

I then thought about forcing the conversion like this, removing the
bitrate limiting:

flc flc transcode 00:ff:a7:0b:09:0f
        # FB:{PATH=%f}T:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}
        [flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [ffmpeg] -loglevel quiet -i - -f
flac -ac 2 -ar 44100 -sample_fmt s16 -

But in the logs it's obvious that if no bitrate limit is present, the
flac file is sent "as is", hence white noise once more.

My attempt at creating a different file type failed miserably as
reported previously:

To be clear, this solution is working. It's simply not as "clean" as I
tend to like things to be. I know I'm being forced to transcode even
when there would be no need (as much as I *know* that a 320Kbps LAME
encoded mp3 is transparent compared to the original). That I find
somewhat irksome but I can live with it. I'd just like to understand why
the .mch extension wasn't working properly. As of now I still clearly
don't understand how one is supposed to add a new file extension if the
need would arose.
