Derek was silent while Claire explained why they had gone into the computer
system. But he could only hold his tongue for so long. "If that was your
main goal, why not check public or government records. Anything of any
major significance could have been found there. There was no need to tap
into a private system."
NM:
"I doubt anything we found would have been found anywhere else." Claire
pointed out quietly, not one for confrontation but not one to back down when
it involved someone she cared about "And the only files we looked at were
his. For some reason someone linked another file with your name on it but
as soon as I saw it had nothing to do with Reese's father I stopped the
trace. The best way to learn about someone is the work they're most
dedicated to doing. The Luna Foundation is that for him."
And Julia reached over and touched Derek's arm, her gaze reminding him of
his promise even though she didn't say anything aloud and the movement was
done so that no one else would spot it. She wasn't going to dominate the
conversation or questioning, but she didn't want the couple to shut down
because Derek unloaded on them. And she knew that when Derek let loose on
someone it was a sight to behold.
She only knew of one person that had ever stood toe to toe with him in that
kind of a mood.
And she was sitting right there next to him.
Julia looked at the two, tilting her head curiously as she admitted "I have
to appreciate the technological skill I saw but I'm sure you realize that
the files you went into are highly classified and that we'll have to
confiscate your equipment until we're sure there aren't any remnants that
could be a security risk."
Both Claire and Brady started to protest but Julia raised her hand, quiet
but firm "That's not negotiable but I promise you'll get your equipment back
in the same working order it's in now. If it's alright with Derek I'd even
suggest you follow us and take it back with you when we're finished scanning
it."
She looked at Derek for his answer.
