Derek could tell that Julia was under a strain and close to her boiling
point. He laid a hand on her shoulder squeezing it reassuringly. He looked
distracted at the other policeman. "Yes, she had my authorization to pick
her up. I haven't had an opportunity to contact the school yet," he added.
"Katherine's mother is quite ill and I'm afraid we have been a bit
preoccupied with that." Then another thought occurred to him. "Alexandra
Maoreaux was with her," he gestured at the other young woman irritation
beginning to fill him. "Why does that matter right now? She's not the one
who took Kat and that is quite obvious."
