"Are you sure it was Jane?" Julia asked, looking at Nick and knowing
he wouldn't consider her question as stepping on his toes.
"I know." Kristin frowned. "I don't understand
it either, Nick. I can't think of a single other thing that would be
more un-like Jane."
She looked to Julia. "I don't know, Julia. Amber said it was...I
would have had problems believing it myself but..." she took a deep
breath.
"I saw the mark on Amber's stomach."
Amber had been right about calming herself, and had
even managed to convince herself to find something to
eat, especially since she had skipped breakfast. But
standing at the kitchen door, she had lost her
appetite again, hearing what the others were
discussing, but she couldn't bring herself to turn
away. She didn't even know if anyone else had noticed
her coming in when Kristin had spoken her last sentence.
