6.5 pounds is an improvement for me. I'm used to my 8-pound Wallstreet. Yeah,
it may not be super light or portable, but it'll fit in a laptop bag, and
it's cheap, so it's probably good enough for me.

5xx advantages ...

o Builtin Ethernet (but required an A-AUI connector)
o Builtin modem
o reliably charger/battery eliminator

5xx disadvantages ...

o PPC upgrades are very expensive
o Modem software is processor sensitive, and the version required for the PPC
upgrade is no longer available
o RAM is limited to a 32 MB upgrade, plus whatever is on the CPU card
o Batteries are very expensive, and are quite finicky
o No PCMCIA support unless you can find the "unobtainium" card cage
o Somewhat difficult to repair

5300 advantages ...

o Already PPC compatible
o RAM capacity is about twice that of the 5xx
o Batteries are very cheap and are still available new
o Has two PCMCIA card slots builtin
o Relatively easy to repair

5300 disadvantages

o No builtin Ethernet (but Lapis' combined Ethernet and video card is
currently available for about $10, new)
o No builtin modem (but 3Com's 56K "X-Jack" PC card modem is occasionally
avilable for about $25)
o unreliable charger/battery eliminator connector
