In Defence of the Wallstreet, I'd like to make a couple points.
1. You change your car battery every 4-5 years (that's the life expectancy).
You change your smoke detector batteries every 6 months, and most of us
change our cell phone batteries every year or so, as they wear out.. Why
shouldn't your laptop battery (which offers better support than either a car
battery or a cell phone battery) also wear out?? Any Wallstreet is by now 4
years old, and some are approaching 5 years!! Ever have a 5 year old car
that needs NO maintenance and NO replacement parts?? That's a 100,000 mile
car without an oil change.. Hmm.....
2. Many Wallstreet batteries are dying now. THat doesn't mean anything other
than 1. perhaps it wasn't used properly (never lleave your battery dead or
drained for longer than necessary, and don't leave it plugged in 24/7), 2.
perhaps you have a bad AC adaptor they go bad occasionally as well), or 3,
perhaps it's reached it's life-limit.
My pickup just hit 265,000 miles. Low & behold the battery cable corroded
off the other day, and the stupid thing wouldn't start. If I followed the
logic of this last posting, I'd be blaming Nissan for poor engineering, when
in fact, I'm driving a rare vehicle that still uses no oil and is reliable at
2.5x's the life of the average car.
Yes Apple has had problems with certain laptops. But compare them to any
other mfr of any other laptop, and I'll bet money that more of the Powerbooks
are still in use on a daily basis than any laptop from any other mfr. Look
at ACER, AST, Compaq, Gateway, and others; many of these have quit assembling
laptops because the quality wasn't there... By comparison, folks are STILL
buying the lemon of all PB lemons, the 5300 series, which is over 10 years
old!
An another note. Contrary to Drew's statement, the Wallstreets do not (in
general) have any issues with the kbds marking the LCD's.. I'm sure that
there are one or two.. But out of the 1000+ that I've seen in our shop this
year, I don't recall a single one. The hinges are probably the worst problem
with the 14" Wallstreets, though one has to consider that a hinge WILL wear
out after a certain number of uses....
The typical problem we find with the power is simply overuse or misuse.. We
repair dozens of power charging problems per month for folks with
Wallstreets. Most of them are caused by folks who've cracked the sound card
by putting too much pressure on the power cable while it's charging. The
machines often keep working, but the connection is loose/intermittent, so the
battery doesn't get fully charged.. Over time this kills the battery..
Thanks,
David
