The button is a separate part, and the switch (which is likely the 
culprit, either that or gunk beneath the button) is part of the trackpad 
assembly.

In the meantime there's always ClickPad II 
<http://home.mindspring.com/~danwr/downloads/clickpad-ii.html> which 
lets you tap on the pad to click.

I use this on my 540 and I love it.
