Roger, have you tried this approach?

This boot floppy (so I'm told) will check the boot Rom
on an Apple Rom HDD and replace it if it's corrupt. I
don't see the PowerBook connection, but it may be a
cure for the 'sleeping sickness'. Could you describe
the symptoms?
