The best advice is probably to upgrade the RAM and then try 8.6 and 9.1 and
see which one you like best.

I probably should have mentioned that my 3400 is a 240 MHz model with a 5400
RPM hard drive upgrade, so my mileage on OS 9 and someone else's might not
be the same. It might not be so hot on a 180 or 200 MHz model with the stock
hard drive. The hard disk makes a big difference on the 3400, as it does on
any pre-G3 PowerBook.

But whatever you do, I think we'd all agree that you should avoid hacking OS
9.2 or OS X (yes, it's possible with 144 MB) on there.
