Tid-Bits did an article a while ago which basically said that with modern
hard disks, there's no point in defragging.  Generally, the defragging
process itself takes more time to accomplish than the performance gains
you'll achieve with it, and with the risk of data loss that accompanies
it, it's basically worthless.
