This is exactly what Rick suggested, and I agree - put it into a folder, not the trash can (even though that is a folder too per se just with a different icon) and have a script move older than files into the trash can and have the trash delete daily on quit. clean solution. I was a claris email user for a long time, and have no problems how pm works with trashing options.
