I have to disagree with this.  As a long-time Claris user (and you may
not understand this if you didn't use that product), I got used to having
options that are not in PowerMail.  One of those options is to delete
items from a folder that are older than X number of days.  This is great
... especially for trash and lists ... where I need the information for a
few days or weeks, but then I want it gone without having to manually
decide which messages are old enough to delete.  This has been
demonstrated as a needed feature by the number of people who use the
AppleScript for awhile (until it becomes too much of a bother).

On another note, someone asked about the stability of PowerMail with a
LOT of messages.  My message count today is 34,000 total, and my
PowerMail (OS X) crashes about once per week while indexing messages.  I
just restart the application and it works for another week or so. 
Generally, it doesn't happen while I'm typing (lucky for me).
