Are you using the OS X buil-in spell checker or something else? OS version? Check your fonts with Font Book or similar. Look in the crashreport in Console: "LOG FILES > ~/Library/Logs/ Crashreporter PowerMail.........crash" and post the report to <http:// pastebin.com> or similar.
