Just a quick note to say thank you for your help both on and off list.
Thought you might also like to know how the problem was remedied, in case it
happens to you.

Rod Wynne-Powell kindly pointed me in the direction of the /sbin/fsck -y
command line on start up.  I've seen it mentioned here before but, as
always, one doesn't take some things in until they are personally relevant!

Once this had been done, I was then able to update Classic from OS 9.2.1 to
9.2.2 (the update wouldn't work before).  The OSX system also seems to run a
little faster and my Lexar FireWire reader is now back to the lightning
speed enjoyed in OS9, pre-OSX installation...
