I think this whole concept of DVD is a thorny one and basically we're not sure which way to leap because of another Betamax-style cock-up by the manufacturers.

As I understand it, Pioneer's DVD-R is the only one which *normally* can be read by standard DVD-ROM drives in PCs. However, there's also DVD+R and DVD-RAM but AFAIK, they're limited to specific drives to read them back. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...
I'm teetering on the brink of buying a DVD-R burner or two as we're filling a ridiculous number of CD-Rs with archive files and I simply want to cut back on the number of disks we have to store.

The idea of a Sony 1.3 GB CD is anathema: Sony are notorious for bringing out odd-ball formats and then finding that they aren't taken up. I cannot believe that standard CD readers will accept a non-standard format.

Once we've got Pro 14n's and next-generation cameras, our RAID systems will fill up at an alarming rate and while hard drives are cheap, they ain't THAT cheap! The concept of archiving 4-point-something GB to DVD appeals, provided that I can read the disk in a few years time. That's why CD still ploughs on - it's the epitome of a 'universal' format.

Hi Michael,

Appreciate your news on this. Can these be read on any CD reader or only a select few?
