I hadn't thought about this until just now... but I'm beginning to suspect that I'm happier with the S2 (re: the focus problem) now because so often I am using it with the Nikon SB-80DX flash on it. I generally just use it to fire other monolight strobes (via slaves) but sometimes I'm using it for fill flash or for action photography.... and when you have that flash attached to the camera, the S2's built in focus-assist light shuts down and it uses the flash unit's built-in red light assist which I believe is superior. Perhaps that's why I so seldom have trouble with the focus these days. Just thinking out loud... it would be interesting to do a test.
