D60 works the same way. Just recently I have tried to stop manually
focussing. Either I am going slowly blind, or the manual focus is just too
hard to judge on such a small viewfinder in normal light. I was getting
loads of pics with the focus always about 10 feet behind the subject. In
most situations, the autofocus seems to do a much better job.

Roll on large viewfinders and better focusing screens.

BTW Do the full frame models have larger viewfinders? Or is it still like
looking through a micro compact camera.
