Simon, The first thing I would suggest is that you upgrade to OS 9.2 you may find that iMovie is more stable in later builds of the OS (an upgrade to 10.2.4 would be best, but you will have to pay for that). You don't say which version of iMovie you are using, but I suspect it will be one of the earlier incarnations. Again, an upgrade to 10.2.4 will allow you to use the latest version (3.0.2) which, with the new OS, you will find much more stable. Is your hard drive partitioned? If not, even though you have 10GB free on your hard drive, it may be badly fragmented so iMovie is struggling to use the free space as a scratch disk. Don't worry about the control strip, it always behaved that way for me too. It's annoying I know but I never found a way to get it to work consistently.
