I had this trouble with a 120gb Lacie firewire drive which could note be
mounted

The problem was that the drive was not secured properly in the drive casing,
this then obviously caused physical damage to the disc. Lacie did replace it
though works fine now.

i found this out by picking the thing up and hearing it rattle or clunk when
I tried to reconnect the FW cables....!

Don't recommend that you try to shake the thing about, but...if you pick it
up and rotate the case, see if it clunks (the sound of the drive hitting the
inside of the casing)....

Also had FW cable trouble with one cable supplied, so try replacing the
cable to see if this was the problem.
