Thank you to all who responded with helpful comments. I shall find out over the next few days what action I shall have to take. Fortunately the LaCie HD was a backup, i.e. most of the files still exist on other machines or disks. There's a small chance that I can afford to lose what I don't have copies of - might be simpler & cheaper than a data recovery job. Will check it out.
