I'm not a Mac user but I just wanted to jump in this thread with my latest backup info.
Last year I lost about 60 Gigs of photos to a hard drive crash so I've been getting serious about backing up my stuff. I decided to just put a bunch of big hard drives in a computer and copy each file to two separate drives. I was describing my plan to a computer professional and he said "you know you can do that automatically with a Level 1 RAID don't you?" Well, no I didn't know that. Now I have a box with four 120 Gig drives in it (got a good deal on the Maxtor drives... only 109 US Dollars each after rebate at Best Buy) but in the system, it looks like two 120 Gig drives for a total of 240G of storage. When you write to a drive, it's really writing to 2 different drives at once. It's not backed up for fire or theft or other stuff that requires offsite storage, but I'm backed up against drive failure and it requires no extra work on my part. I'll be throwing another pair of drives into the box real soon. I assume that you can get these RAID cards for Macs, I'm really happy with this setup. I'm surprised that more people don't use this type of system... hard drives are cheap and this is great insurance against drive failure.
