I assume that you can get these RAID cards for Macs, I'm really happy with this setup. I'm surprised that more people don't use this type of system... hard drives are cheap and this is great insurance against drive failure.
With system X it's built in, no card needed. But (as you say) there's no theft/fire protection so you still need another backup scheme.
